The Procession
By 8:00 a.m. all candidates must be at the assembly
point designated for each school (see
map). The procession will begin at 8:30 a.m. sharp led by the
Grand Marshal, the Chancellor, members of the administration, the
Board of Trustees, honorary degree recipients, faculty, and alumni
from the Class of 1958. The student divisions will follow in the
order shown here.
Order of March
Candidates should march in front of or behind
the person with whom they wish to sit not side by side.
Caps and Gowns
Candidates receiving an undergraduate degree
should wear tassels on the right. Candidates receiving graduate degrees should
wear tassels on the left for the entire ceremony and carry the hood
over their arm.
The Ceremony
Candidates should remove their caps for the singing
of "America the Beautiful." The program begins with the
Commencement Address and is followed by the presentation and conferral
of degrees. Candidates for undergraduate degrees should move their
tassel from the right to the left after the Chancellor confers the
degree. Candidates for graduate degrees should hood one another
when asked to do so by their dean.
The Recession
All graduates will recess from the Quadrangle
under the direction of the Commencement Marshals. Graduates should
arrange to meet friends and relatives at the Commencement Receptions
noted here.
Distribution of Diplomas
Diplomas will be distributed at the Commencement Receptions.
If a graduate will not be able to attend Commencement, his or her
diploma will be held in the Student Records Office, Women's Building lower level, until June 2, 2008. Diplomas that are not picked up by
that time will be mailed to the address listed on your Intent to
Graduate form.
Disability Access
Anyone needing special assistance while attending
the Friday morning All-University Commencement Ceremony should contact Donna Kepley at (314) 935-5102. Individuals who
will need a wheelchair are encouraged to contact directly the Medical West
Healthcare Center at (314) 725-1888 for rental arrangements. An American
Sign Language interpreter will be present during Commencement and
during individual School ceremonies.
Vehicles transporting mobility-impaired visitors may use the driveway south of Brookings Hall to drop off their passengers. Elevators in South Brookings provide access to the Quadrangle. Since handicapped parking is limited near the Quadrangle, drivers may be asked to park their vehicles in a general parking area after dropping off their passengers. For visitors who must park in handicapped spaces, please be sure to bring your personal State Handicapped Parking tag or verification of it. This tag or tag verification will allow you to park in a handicapped space on campus. For more information go to http://parking.wustl.edu/commencement_2008.htm.
Three entrances to the Quadrangle (where Commencement is held) are ramped for wheelchair access including the entrances south and north of Ridgley Hall and between north Duncker and west Cupples I Halls. Once inside the Quadrangle, visitors with special needs will be assisted by one of the ushers for proper seating.
General Parking
Parking is always difficult on Commencement day. The best parking for access to the Quadrangle will be in one of the lots east of Brookings Hall. Commencement visitors may park in any area of the University parking lots except for those designated as disabled or loading zones. For more information go to http://parking.wustl.edu/commencement_2008.htm.
MetroLink
MetroLink, the St. Louis light rail system, is an alternative to driving to the University. If MetroLink is convenient to your hotel or home it is recommended that you use it. Exit at the Skinker Station, which is located just east of the Brookings Hall parking lot. MetroLink information is available at http://www.metrostl.org.
Emergency Services
A special Aid Station with a nurse and campus
police will be located in the southeast corner of the Quadrangle.
During the Commencement Ceremony an ambulance service is in attendance
in case of any emergency situation. Anyone needing assistance should
come to the Aid Station.
Pictures
During the Commencement Ceremony
parents and guests, out of consideration for others, may not come to
the front of the stage or stand on the ramps leading to the stage
for pictures. In the northeast corner of the Quadrangle is a roped-off
area for picture taking. The Commencement Committee would appreciate
it if parents and guests would enter this area, take a picture, and
return to their seats as quickly as possible so others can take
their pictures. (Individual pictures of each student at each of the individual school recognition ceremonies will be available from professional photographers.)
Undergraduate Enrollment Deposit
Refund
If an enrollment deposit was paid upon admission
to the University, that deposit minus any unpaid charges will be
automatically refunded. Enrollment deposits will be mailed at the
end of June. This applies to undergraduate students ONLY.
